Gravel is a versatile addition to an outdoor space. From being used in garden design to providing practical solutions, there are plenty of ways to introduce this material.
Whether you’re a gardening fan who wants to enhance your outdoor space or a professional landscaper searching for some inspiration, here are some creative ways to add gravel bags to your garden.
Building garden paths and walkways
When used in the creation of paths and walkways, gravel combines practicality with aesthetically pleasing design. This cost-effective solution is suitable for constructing walkways, making a safe surface for people to walk on, as well as mapping out different sections of the garden.
Using gravel bags as a base for paths is also useful for preserving the area too. It helps with drainage and keeps weeds from sprouting between the stones.
To lay a path with gravel, begin by planning out the pathway. You can use string or paint to set out where the gravel will go. From there, make sure you have enough gravel to cover the area and dig out your path. Around four inches is enough depth for this type of walkway. You’ll need a weed membrane next. Run this along the pathway, then lay the edging of your path and fill with the gravel to act as a base layer under stones or pavers.
Preventing erosion and water runoff
If your garden is on a slope or includes water features, gravel bags are excellent for erosion control. If you strategically place filled bags in areas where water accumulates, it can help to prevent soil erosion during heavy rains by acting as a dam and holding soil in place.
While this is common in larger construction projects or in public spaces like parks, gravel bags can also be used in private properties on a smaller scale.
Creating raised beds
If you’re creating areas for flowers or planting vegetables, raised beds are pretty addition that are easy to manage. There are lots of advantages that come with incorporating raised beds, from improving soil drainage and easier weed control, to moving your plants away from some common pests. Additionally, these are easier to access than flower beds on the ground.
Gravel bags can form the ideal base layer in these beds as the gravel allows for water drainage and soil aeration. Alternatively, stacking gravel bags around the frame of the flower bed can form a barrier and keep everything in place.
