If you want to brighten up a room or if you want to stop it from feeling like a cave then you’ll find a huge range of tips here. Making a small room or even a dark room feel more cosy has never been easier!
White is always a Great Starting Point –
If you want to instantly brighten up your space, consider using white paint. When you use white paint, you can make the room feel much bigger than it is and it will also help it to feel brighter as well. A lot of people opt for cream paint when they are decorating a room as this makes it feel warmer, but you will be compromising on brightness when you do this. A lot of people think that if they use a lot of mirrors, they can easily bounce the light around the room but this is actually a myth. The best way for you to bounce light is to use white photo frames and decorations. The main reason for this is because white is able to send out as much light as possible while also bouncing indirectly to the surrounding surfaces. It also helps to have a white ceiling as well, so that you can really make it feel taller. White bedding is also a great option if you are looking to make a bedroom feel bigger.
Wall Lighting –
If you have a lot of lights on your walls then this will help to keep the room looking bright. If you want to really benefit from this then consider adding shades to your light bulbs or fittings. The main reason for this is because it helps to direct the light up and down, and it can even help you to add a very warm glow. If you have art, consider having lights that are faced downwards, so that you can cast beautiful highlights onto the images. Undercabinet lighting is also another great choice because it helps to emit a glow from the edges of the fixtures. If you want to add a shadow or if you want to really emphasise this then LED is the way to go. With a laundry room or a dim, small room, try and have a flush-mounted ceiling light. You could even have a semi-flush light a bit below the ceiling, as this will help to diffuse the light better across the room. A domestic electrician will be able to help you with all of this, and it is a great way for you to make sure that you are getting everything installed properly.
Black and Linear Elements –
Black may sound counterintuitive when compared to the above paragraph but if you are able to add it subtly then you can really create something special. Contrast can really help light areas to pop out and if you want to emphasise this then try and have some long floor lamps or even some patterned fabric. You could have zebra print to try and divert attention to the various light sources in the room or you could opt to have some blue fabric. Blue is a great colour because it is able to give off a beachy vibe when used in the right situation and this can really help to create a luxury feel.
Lightbulbs –
Your lightbulbs will play a huge part in the brightness of a room. You can opt for a daylight bulb or you could even have a warmer, yellow bulb. This will help you to create an intimate atmosphere and it can also help you to balance out the room that you have. White bulbs can create a much crisper feel but it won’t do much in terms of the cosiness of the room. By using different bulbs in different areas of the room, you can really transform the room.
Area Rugs –
Area rugs are ideal for laminate or dark hardwood floors. The problem is that they do drain a lot of light from a space and this is especially the case if you have a corridor that doesn’t have any windows. If you want to try and get this sorted out then try and have a runner rug instead. This will help you to break up the flooring and it will also give you the feeling of having a rich and airy room. This can also make you feel as though the room is brighter as well. If you want to get the best result then a traditional patterned rug is great and this is especially the case if it has white or warm tones.
