7 Steps To More Space In Your Home*

As we embark on yet another lockdown, some people will be relishing the fact they can spend more time at home and others will be dreading it. While lockdown can be the perfect time to get some jobs done in your home, it can also be a difficult time with your family all at home together, and you might realise that you just need a little more space. If you can afford to ‘buy’ some space without having to move house, then bifold doors can really open up the space you have or getting an extension, conservatory or outhouse could be perfect and not as expensive as buying a whole new house, but they will add value to your home and give you loads more room. While you can’t move to a bigger house overnight, there are some things you can do to create some more space in your home or maximise the space you already have.

Make The Most Of The Entrance

It’s difficult to say exactly what you can do when everyone has a different home, but everyone has a front door and a space where they enter their house, and this is a space you can certainly maximise by placing a bench or seating area here. It makes for an ideal place for people to sit and remove shoes and put bags down when they come in.

Maximise Space In The Kitchen

In most houses, the kitchen is the busiest room of all, so it needs to be a functional room. You can maximise space in your kitchen storage solutions such as vertical shelving, drawer organisers and food storage containers.

Use Clever Storage In The Bathroom

If you have a small bathroom, there are loads of ways you can use clever storage to maximise the space you have. You can use baskets under the sink, open shelving behind the door and use a shoe organiser for things like makeup and hair accessories.

Buy Furniture Wisely

There are some great options for multifunctional furniture now such as ottomans and stools that not only look great but really good for storage.

Utilise Your Kids’ Rooms

Children’s rooms need to be used for everything from playing, sleeping and studying, so use notice boards to hang artwork or schoolwork. Also, Bunk beds or cabin beds are a great space saver.

Make The Most Of Your Bedroom Too

Ensure the wardrobes in your bedroom are used properly and keep out of season clothes under the bed or in the loft. Also, save space by having your TV on the wall and put shelves up to keep things out of the way.

Get Rid Of Clutter

One of the best ways to make space is to actually get rid of stuff. It’s not hard to see why ‘things’ pile up, it’s not like every time you go shopping and buy something new, you get rid of something old, so it’s inevitable that the number of things you have increases. Doing huge clear outs every now and again is a good way to get rid of everything easily and is also good for clearing your mind and making money if you decide to sell stuff too.
