Why Big Is Best When It Comes To Living Room Furniture*

Big, in most circumstances, is almost always better. We remember those giant skyscrapers like the Empire State more so than those cookie-cutter office blocks. We enjoy hefty portions of food (in moderation of course), some of us like our cars big, some of us like our muscles big – big is better! That is certainly true when it comes to the home as well – a big home means more space, more value and more opportunities. A big bed means more room to sleep; a big garden means more place to play. Big is better when we talk about the home in general and that includes the living room.

The first big thing we could look at? The humble rug. A big rug to cover a carpet is something that binds a room together – and there are more than enough options to suit everyone and their desired design. Go big with the rug, drop it in the centre of the useable floor (floor not covered by furniture) and enjoy the way a large rug ties a room together.

There’s something a bit snobby about the way trendsetters speak about oversized furniture. While they may push their glasses up, squint and complain about furniture not being ‘an efficient use of space’, they are not looking at the big picture here. Style is incredibly important, but if we ignore the function of the room, we are doing ourselves an incredible disservice. A home is for living in, not just for looking at and while minimalist sensibilities are excellent for design – space considerations take a back seat to what actually works. We want our living room to look good, and work for us – and big oversized furniture actually works for what we require from our living room above all – comfort. Feel free to chuck some of the advice you might hear out of the window – it’s not fair to consider space efficiency when most people would rather that their family could get on the couch! If you want function, oversized furniture is the way to go.

And speaking of couches – there are plenty of quirky and stylish options to ensure that your family can actually get a seat during movie night. Designs like leather corner sofas not only look incredibly good – but tick all the boxes. They are comfy, and they use space really well and fit into most rooms like a charm. It also leaves a lot of space for creativity in the rest of the room. Don’t be afraid to go big to achieve comfort.

Huge cabinets work really well for the living room with entertainment at the heart. Large custom cabinets include holes for storage and centrepieces for televisions and become the focal piece of a room. These monoliths are not to be avoided and provide enough space for everything one could want to store in a living room.

Big and bold patterns are something to really consider in the living room of 2017. Bold greens, big reds – there’s a lot to like about these big ideas. Don’t just go big with your furniture, but go big with your ideas.

Love,

Charlotte
