With Rory’s second birthday approaching in April, along with an Ideal Home magazine shoot shortly after, I thought it was about time to turn his bedroom into a bit more of a grown up space complete with a big boy bed.
We haven’t actually moved him into the bed yet seeing as we’re off to Paris next week & who knows what will happen to bedtimes for a little while. Elsa was always so easy, but I have a feeling that boys are completely different & we may have a little monkey on our hands.
I’ve been a fan of mustard for a while now & love it in conjunction with grey however Mr The Home That Made Me couldn’t be more opposite & has made comments throughout this makeover about how disgusting it is. I’d like to think that now he’s seen the finishing look he’s going to apologise profusely & admit that I am always right when it comes to interiors so he shouldn’t attempt to get involved.
I still absolutely love the Great Little Trading Company star print so knew this room makeover wasn’t going to require complete upheaval & could be done with a few accessories, much to Mr THTMM’s relief. You can find the wallpaper here, stacking box here, curtains here, toy box here, lamp here & quilted bedspread here.
The main change in the room other than the pops of colour is the bed. This is an Ikea Hemnes day bed which we bought second hand off Gumtree & painted in Annie Sloan ‘Paris Grey‘…they do sell a grey version however it always seems out of stock in our local Ikea plus going second hand meant we saved £££.
I also bought a couple of tester pots of Homebase Home Of Colour ‘Yellow Submarine‘ which I used to paint the large RJV letters from @loupy_designs, the wooden barn star from The Range & the handles on the day bed & wardrobes.
These two prints were from Desenio here & here.
Accessory wise I ordered some bespoke items from the lovely Dotty at The Dotty Design House with this name frame, some alternating mustard/grey wooden stars & my absolute favourite, ‘dream big little one’ dream catcher all to my colour scheme.
Lastly I bought some mustard bedding from Argos which you can find here, a chunky knit throw from Dunelm, a cushion from the range & couldn’t resist this bargain £2.50 pug cushion from Asda!
As a neutral at heart kind of girl, I actually absolutely love the colour that the mustard accessories have bought to the room – it really adds character as well as brightens it up a bit. Perfect for a growing little boy.
Hope you all love it as much as I do!
Love,

Love your house Charlotte, and love this renovation too. Can I ask how you painted the IKEA day bed? I’ve some IKEA furniture that I want to paint and just wondering whether it needs primer? Certain type of paint? Xxx
We just painted it in Annie Sloan chalk paint so didn’t need any prep work – if you search the blog you’ll find a tutorial 🙂 x
We’ve just decorated our bedroom and it has light blues, greys and yellows. Yellow is so effective and easy to pop a few bits in for some colour!
Definitely! x
Love it! Where are the picture shelves from xx
They were Ikea & Homebase but I painted them in Annie Sloan Paris Grey x
Gorgeous! Where did you get the name bunting from?
It’s from @loupy_designs on Instagram 🙂 x
Lovely room! Where did you get the pom pom garland from?
Amazing my little girls nursery is grey with a hint of yellow, we have matching stools ?? would love to know where the shelves are from ??
This is such a lovely space, what a lovely bedroom. Has definitely got me inspired to makeover my sons bedroom now!
I love the ikea bed I’ve been looking at it for my little boy, does he sleep well in it with it being that little bit higher? I don’t really want to get a toddler bed as I don’t think he’d be in it longx
Im a newbee to your blog (love it)! I myself have a nearly two year old and have been thinking for so long about making that step from cot bed to bed! You have 100% persuaded me to make the move. The yellow is so effective by the way. Can i ask where you got your Rorys ride on vintage car? X
Hi Sophie – Rory is actually still in a cot as I can’t risk the loss of daytime naps!! The car was from Halfords but I know The White Company sell them & My1styears.com do personalised ones 🙂 x
