The Ultimate Bathroom Makeover Toolkit*

Many people choose to change the bathroom when they buy a new home. Even one that appears spotless could be off-putting if it was used by the previous owners. Of course, many bathrooms are updated or refitted every seven to ten years by homeowners anyway. It’s the first thing that buyers look at after the kitchen because they can gauge how carefully the property has been cared for. If your bathroom could do with a makeover of its own, then try this ultimate bathroom makeover toolkit to help inspire you:

Pottery –
Choosing a new toilet and basin isn’t quite as easy as you would think. There are several options for both. Many local DIY superstores will sell your basin and toilet as part of a set. It’s a good idea to buy the set because you want the white coating to match as well as the shape. You may be savvy enough to install these things yourself. There are plenty of how-to guides online. Of course, it might be a bit too dirty to have to deal with yourself!

Toilets and basins can be hung on the wall, giving the appearance that they float. This can also give the illusion the room is bigger because there is nothing on the floor beneath them. You might choose recessed pottery. This allows your toilet cistern and drainage of the basin to be concealed within fitted furniture like cupboards. The cheapest option is your standard pedestal and toilet. However, dust can gather behind them in those awkward to reach spaces. You will also be able to see all the plumbing back there.

Bath –
The bathtub is one of the most important parts of the bathroom. You may want a whirlpool tub for that ultimate relaxing experience. Taps are usually sold separately. If you need a shower over the tub, don’t forget to select a shower screen. If you want a whirlpool tub, you will need a qualified electrician to install this. If you are just replacing a simple tub and taps, you may be able to tackle this on your own.

Radiator –
Keeping your towel toasty is exactly what your bathroom radiator should be for! Pick a flat panel style radiator with a towel bar for a contemporary look. A plumber can install this for you so it will heat up when you have the central heating on.

Tiling –
You can be brave with the intensity of the colour for tiling. Some tiles are suitable for the wall and the floor so you can cover both. Why not pick something deeper in shade with a lighter border? High gloss or marble effect tiles are very popular. Of course, you could choose an acrylic or laminate covering for your walls. To install tiles, you will need some spacers and a good quality grout. Removing the old tiles may require a chisel and a bit of brute force!

Paint –

If you don’t want to tile every wall, then you will need some specialist bathroom paint. You can apply this in the same way as regular paint. It will protect your walls and woodwork from the damp and steam.

Enjoy your beautiful new bathroom!
