How to throw your child a football-themed birthday party*

If you’ve got a child who’s football-obsessed, chances are they’re after a themed party for their special day. But unless you’re an experienced party planner, you might not know where to start. Fortunately, many parents have been in your shoes before. This means most of the work has already been done for you. To help you out, here’s our guide to throwing your child the best football-themed birthday they’ll ever have.

Venue and activities

The venue for the party will largely depend on the activities you arrange for the big day. The most obvious game for a football-themed party is the beautiful game itself, which can take any form you wish. For example, you may choose to have a small kickabout at home or have guests do a penalty shootout.

You could also head to a local park if there are lots of children attending. That way, there’s less chance of the ball going over your fence – or through your window. After the whistle is blown, you can either have cake at home or head to a private venue.

Dress code

Every themed party requires all guests to look the part, so ask each of the parents to make sure their children put on their favourite football kits. Perhaps your child has expressed there’s a particular football shirt they’ve had their eye on – in that case, surprise them with it for the party so they can show it off to their friends and wear it proudly.

If you’re organising a match among the children, you’ll need two different coloured kits or some bibs, otherwise things may get confusing. The last thing you want is any arguments. You can then keep these for future football parties.

Decorations

Decorations are the key to nailing your theme, whether you need to trim up your home or the venue. Try not to go too overboard since the games and dress code will likely speak for themselves. Focus on putting up some banners, blow up some balloons, and order some napkins in their favourite team’s colours. Little party bags filled with toys and sweets will only make the event extra special.

Party food

No birthday party is complete without cake! Because the occasion is all about football, it seems silly not to have the cake follow the theme. You could even give this a go yourself, decorating a round cake like a football, or a square cake like a shirt. If baking isn’t your forte, a professional cake decorator (or family friend) will be able to do this for you. Now, what about the rest of the banquet? Keep things simple as we know how picky our little ones can be. Opt for popular party staples such as sandwiches, sausage rolls, pizza, crisps, fruit, and soft drinks. Be sure to ask around beforehand for any allergies or dietary preferences and account for these in your spread.

Love,
